Top Things to Do in Phu Quoc Island

Thanks to our deep love for Phu Quoc and many years serving tourists exploring this island, we have selected six outstanding activities, which aim to provide a comprehensive picture of Phu Quoc, from its natural beauty (sea, coral, islets) to local culture (fishing villages and night markets), and unique culinary experiences (seafood). We believe that these activities will cater to the diverse needs of visitors, ranging from relaxation and exploration to cultural and culinary experiences.

1. Relax on the paradise beaches

With a mild climate all year round, relaxing on the beaches has become a highlight that Phu Quoc wants to introduce to visitors. You can relax on the fine white sand of Sao Beach, watch the romantic sunset depicting the incredible scenery at Long Beach, or enjoy the peace at Ong Lang Beach.

2. Dive into the magical world of coral reefs

The cool water temperature turns Phu Quoc’s sea into a paradise for coral to grow, attracting hundreds of colorful coral species to swim around. Phu Quoc is an ideal place for diving activities (snorkeling and scuba diving), admiring the sparkling beauty of coral, marine plants, and ornamental fish swaying and dancing in the ocean.

3. Explore the bustling Duong Dong night market

When night falls, Phu Quoc Night Market (also known as Duong Dong Night Market) is brightly lit with yellow lights, standing out in the middle of the bustling street. Under the warm yellow streetlights and the light from the stalls, the night market street is filled with vibrant vitality. The stalls are close together, selling a wide range of items, from souvenirs to local specialties. Phu Quoc Night Market is not only a place to shop or eat, but also a space to feel the nightlife of the island. The laughter, the aroma of grilled food, and the smell of fresh seafood blend into the air, creating a unique space of sounds and flavors.

4. Discover the beauty of the small islands

With the presence of dozens of large and small islands, Phu Quoc is covered with splendid beauty. To make your trip more meaningful, rent a boat to explore some of the small islands around the big island (Phu Quoc Island). Here, you can find absolute peace, separate from the hustle and bustle of tourists on the main island. Enjoy leisurely fishing and catching some fish, fresh squid for an outdoor barbecue party right on the island.

5. Visit Rach Vem fishing village (Starfish Kingdom)

If you are looking for a peaceful and pristine Phu Quoc, explore Rach Vem fishing village, also known as the “starfish kingdom”, about 15 km from Duong Dong Town. This place is not only enchanting with its crystal clear blue sea water, clearly visible to the bottom, but also amazes you with hundreds of bright red starfish scattered under the shallow water. The wooden bridges leading to floating houses on the sea are the highlights, where you can enjoy fresh seafood at affordable prices. Visit this fishing village to feel the simple local life.

6. Enjoy fresh seafood with the flavor of the island

When coming to Phu Quoc, don’t forget to enjoy dishes made from fresh seafood, just caught from the sea around the island. You will taste many diverse dishes (grilled, steamed, and stir-fried), with the aroma spreading right from the restaurant gate, and the natural sweetness melting when you take small bites. Try the famous specialties such as Ham Ninh crab with firm meat, scallops grilled with fatty scallion oil, or unique sea urchin. Experience choosing fresh seafood directly and having it prepared on the spot at Phu Quoc night market, Rach Vem market, or at coastal restaurants, ensuring a wonderful and memorable culinary feast.

Phu Quoc Island Weather

With a typical tropical monsoon climate, Phu Quoc has two distinct seasons, each with its own beauty.

Dry season (November – April): This is the ideal time to explore the pearl island. The sky is clear and cloudless, the golden sunshine stretches across the fine white sand beaches, and the sea is as blue as jade with crystal clear water to the bottom. The temperature is pleasant, the waves are gentle, inviting all kinds of outdoor activities, such as swimming, diving to see the corals, or admiring the brilliant sunset. This is also the peak season, so book your service early for the most complete experience.

Rainy season (May – October): Although there are heavy rains, sometimes accompanied by big waves in the West, this is the time when nature is greener and Suoi Tranh waterfall is more majestic than ever.

If you visit at the end of April or October, when the seasons change, you can enjoy pleasant weather and better prices.

Phu Quoc Transportation

Getting to Phu Quoc:

Phu Quoc Island lies about 400 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, off the southern coast of Vietnam.

The most convenient way to reach the island is by booking a direct flight from Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc. Additionally, major cities like Hanoi and Da Nang also offer direct flights to meet the growing demand for tourism.

Some smaller cities, such as Da Lat, Buon Ma Thuot, and Hai Phong, occasionally have flights to Phu Quoc; however, the flight schedule is not very regular.

If you are on a journey to explore the Mekong Delta and have a stopover in Kien Giang, taking a boat to the island is an option worth considering.

  • From Rach Gia Pier (Kien Giang), the journey covers approximately 120 km and takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes by boat.
  • From Ha Tien Pier (Kien Giang), the distance is shorter — about 50 km, with a travel time of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Traveling by boat from Kien Giang to Phu Quoc is a great option to avoid returning to Ho Chi Minh City, helping you save both time and travel expenses.
