Top Things to Do in Cao Bang

If you intend to visit Cao Bang, here are six activities that combine outstanding natural beauty, unique cultural values, and the diversity of experiences that the land of the headland offers to you.

1. Admire the majestic beauty of Ban Gioc Waterfall

Of course, Ban Gioc is the first destination not to be missed in Cao Bang. When you are standing in front of a giant wall of water, up to 300 meters wide, where the smooth flow, like a white silk strip, falls from an impressive height. Ban Gioc Waterfall, the natural border between Vietnam and China, is not only the largest waterfall in Vietnam but also considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. The sound of rushing water, along with the misty fog covering the green mountains and forests, will overwhelm you. And then, you will feel so small before this natural wonder. Choose a few distinct angles of the waterfall to take souvenir photos, or sit in a small boat close to the foot of the waterfall and feel each cool drop of water caress your face in amazement.

2. Discover Nguom Ngao Cave

Not far from Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave invites you to the magical world of limestone. Step inside, and the cool air is like a sudden hug. The guiding lights will slowly reveal the stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and forms. They seem to become natural sculptures, with multiple shapes constantly changing like a slow film through each cave arch. True to its name, “Hang Ho” in the Tay language, Nguom Ngao contains a wild, majestic, and mysterious beauty, challenging your imagination.

3. Enjoy the peaceful space of the Thang Hen Lake System

Feel like you are lost in a watercolor painting, with the calm water surface surrounding the steep, rocky mountains, when you come to the Thang Hen Lake System. Not just one, but 36 small lakes with clear blue water like jade, connected through underground crevices. During the rainy season, the lakes merge to form a soft, silver river winding between the limestone valleys, reflecting the clouds, sky, and trees. Walking along the lake, breathing in the fresh air, or renting a boat to cruise on the calm water will help you wash away all your worries.

4. Touch “Mountain God’s Eye”

Thung Mountain, also known by the evocative name “Mountain God’s Eye”, is a destination not to be missed for those who love nature and love to explore new things. The towering limestone mountain suddenly has a giant hole through it, creating an imposing image like the eye of heaven watching the flow of life. Standing at the foot of the mountain, looking far away through that giant “eye”, you will feel the vastness of the sky and earth and the strange, wild beauty of nature. This is definitely an excellent backdrop for a barbecue or fruit party, as well as for taking unforgettable souvenir photos.

5. Immerse yourself in the diverse culture of ethnic minorities

Cao Bang not only has beautiful scenery but is also the cradle of many indigenous cultures of many ethnic minorities. You will have the opportunity to learn about the lives, customs, and traditional crafts of ethnic groups, including the Tay, Nung, Dao, and H’Mong. Visit traditional craft villages to see how they weave, make incense, and forge tools… or choose a homestay with an ethnic community to experience the most authentic indigenous life through a day in their lives. The fascinating stories and warm hospitality of the local people will be unforgettable gifts on your journey to Vietnam’s northern mountainous region.

6. Experience fruit picking and local cuisine with the locals

What could be better than touching the lives of the indigenous people simply? Spend time with a tour guide or local people to pick up fresh chestnuts that have just fallen in the forest, then boil and enjoy them right there or at the local people’s house to savor the unforgettable taste. Don’t forget to explore the orchards and pick the ripe, crunchy persimmons, which allow you to interact more with the locals and discover the fresh flavors of nature in a most authentic and intimate way.

Summer (May – August): The Call of the White Water

Entering summer, Cao Bang puts on a lush green coat full of the vitality of the vast mountains and forests. Although the weather is sunny, this duration is the best time to admire Ban Gioc Waterfall at its most majestic and passionate. The water flows turbulently, creating white foam like giant silk ribbons falling from the sky.

Autumn (September – November): Nature’s Golden Moment

Autumn is often considered the “muse” of Cao Bang, with its cool, dry, and crisp weather. Late October and early November are particularly special, as terraced fields turn a brilliant golden yellow in anticipation of harvest. Fields of purple-pink buckwheat flowers and bright yellow wild sunflowers burst into bloom across the mountainside. This is the ideal time for couples to whisper secrets and stroll amidst Cao Bang’s characteristic colors and scents.

Winter (December-January): A Magical Touch

While the weather can be pretty chilly, even dropping below 10 degrees Celsius in the early morning and late evening, winter unveils a tranquil beauty in Cao Bang. Fog blankets the mountain peaks, transforming the landscape into a fairy tale realm. Wrap yourself in a warm coat to savor the hot, comforting dishes typical of the highlands, and feel the warmth emanating from the homes of the ethnic people, with kitchen smoke curling in the distance, perhaps stirring nostalgic memories of your own countryside.

For the Vietnamdrive team, we especially love the period from August to early September, when Ban Gioc Waterfall is in its majestic full flow, and November, when the fields of buckwheat flowers and wild sunflowers are in vibrant bloom. However, each season, Cao Bang tells a different story, evoking distinct emotions. Listen to your heart and choose “your season” to embark on your journey to explore this enchanting land!

Cao Bang Transportation

The journey from Hanoi to Cao Bang is easier, with breathtaking routes. You may use a bus, a private car, or a van. Vietnamdrive does not recommend choosing a motorbike from Hanoi because it is too far away, approximately 280 km.

Getting to Cao Bang from Hanoi:

Overnight or day buses:

Taking a bus is a practical and economical option when many buses run during the day and overnight. You can come to the central Hanoi bus station, either My Dinh or Giap Bat, and ask for tickets to Cao Bang. Its rate costs from 200,000 to 300,000 VND.

Private car or van:

If you’re traveling with a group or family and prefer the flexibility of your schedule from Hanoi to Cao Bang, a private car or van is a great option for comfortable travel with custom stops along the way.

You can hire a car with a driver through local travel agencies in Hanoi, or learn more about a private transfer from Hanoi to Cao Bang for door-to-door travel and daytime mountain routes.

Exploring Around Cao Bang:

Once you arrive in Cao Bang city, a world of natural wonders opens up, and you’ll need local transportation to explore it thoroughly.

Motorbike rentals: While driving directly from Hanoi isn’t recommended due to the distance, renting a motorbike in Cao Bang City for around 200,000 VND per day is the quintessential way to experience the region. It offers unparalleled freedom to discover hidden gems and stop for photos whenever a stunning vista catches your eye.

Important tip: Always fill up your tank before heading out! Gas stations can be scarce on the more remote mountain roads. Be prepared for winding, scenic routes that promise incredible views. Also, recommending traveling with a professional motorbike rider is the best choice.

Taxi: As with other cities in Vietnam, taxis are readily available for your choice. However, please pay attention to asking about the waiting time.

A private car or van: If you travel from Hanoi by this means of transportation, it can be included as part of a rental discussion for visiting Ban Gioc Waterfall and going around Cao Bang. However, it is challenging to rent a car with a well-trained driver who works in tourism in Cao Bang.
