Hue City

The ancient past still lives in the present, reflected in royal palaces,
the tranquility of the river, and the serenity of the temples.

Overview of Hue City

Welcome to Hue, the charming heart of Central Vietnam and the ancient capital of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945). Here, time seems to stand still in the streets, local lifestyle, and historical buildings. These features make Hue a living museum of history, culture, and architecture.

Walking in Hue, you will feel the magical blend between the majestic beauty of the royal palaces and the peace of the Perfume River and Ngu Mountain. Every street corner and every mossy tiled roof by the ancient citadel walls tells a story about the glorious past. Walk on each street shaded by lush green trees to find yourself suddenly dropped in a nostalgic space and slow life, where you can find inner peace and discover profound cultural values.

Top Things to Do in Hue City

When traveling to Hue, you’ll find a variety of activities to experience. Here are some top things you must do to understand the city better.

Visit the Hue Imperial City

Stepping into the Forbidden City, you will be overwhelmed by the majestic royal architectural palaces, with temples, yellow yin-yang tiled roofs, red lacquer, and gilded gilding protecting the palaces, and historical stories stained with time still imprinted on each door frame.

Visit the royal tombs

Each tomb has a unique architectural style and contains secrets about the life and work of the Nguyen Dynasty kings. For example, the Minh Mang tomb is airy and in harmony with nature, like the leadership spirit of the wise king. The Tu Duc tomb is poetic, like the otherworldly life of the king who loved poetry. The Khai Dinh tomb is majestic and multi-style, like the thoughts of the king who followed the innovation trend.

Explore Buddhist culture

Hue has more than 109 pagodas, proving that this is the center of Vietnamese Buddhism. You can find tranquility in the pagodas, such as Thien Mu Pagoda, reflecting on the Perfume River, and Tu Hieu Pagoda, silently under the shade of trees, where Zen master Nhat Hanh chose to rest in his final days. Try walking softly and speaking softly, bringing your soul that wants tranquility to the peaceful pagodas in the sacred land.

Enjoy Hue cuisine

Many people consider Hue the culinary capital of Vietnam. Try typical dishes such as rich Hue beef noodle soup, fragrant grilled spring rolls, banh beo, banh nam, delicate banh loc, and cool royal sweet soup. Hue cuisine features various flavors and styles, reflecting a culinary art that masterfully uses spices.

Walking along the Perfume River

Hue is poetic not only because of the ancient citadel but also because of the slowly flowing Perfume River, along with paths through green parks dotted with carefully tended rose beds. Try walking slowly with your lover on the walking path or the Lim Wood Bridge on the water. You will see Hue as slower, quieter, and sometimes more thoughtful, like the personality of the people here.

Hue Weather

Hue City enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, which gives each season its own unique charm and offers a variety of experiences and activities.

Rainy season (from October to February of the following year)

Hue rain is not just rain. These are the days of continuous light rains, sometimes with storms. Rain brings Hue a quiet, romantic, and nostalgic beauty, making the ancient space even more gloomy.

If you love gentleness and tranquility and want to contemplate a very different Hue, this is the ideal time. Don’t forget to order a cup of hot coffee in an ancient villa, watching the rain flutter on the leaves and in front of the porch. And remember to bring an umbrella, raincoat, and warm clothes to keep your body warm!

Dry season (from March to September)

Hue transforms into a more brilliant and dynamic look during the dry season. Golden sunshine spreads across the streets; the Perfume River sparkles under the sunlight.

The temperature can be pretty high, especially in May, June, and July, but the sky is clear, and there is very little rain; it is highly favorable for visiting mausoleums and pagodas or exploring the shady An Hien garden house.

Prepare a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen, and remember to drink enough water to enjoy the beautiful sunny days in the ancient capital.

You can choose the night train from Hanoi to enjoy the magical night beauty or from Da Nang to admire the majestic picture of mountains and sea through Hai Van Pass.

In the small city center of Hue, walking or cycling is the best way to explore the tree-lined streets or stroll around the Imperial City. To travel to further attractions, such as ancient royal tombs, Canh Duong Beach, and the poetic Lang Co Beach, and explore the wild Bach Ma National Park, renting a private car or van with a professional driver will be the right choice, ensuring convenience and comfort.

In addition, taxis and technology-based car applications, such as Grab, are always ready to serve on all routes or in front of large hotels, making them very convenient for short distances within the city.
