Highlights to visit Tam Coc-Bich Dong in Ninh Binh for your trip
Tam Coc-Bich Dong is an important part of the scenic complex in Ninh Binh, recognized…
Limestone mountains frame a picturesque landscape of winding rivers and vibrant green or golden rice fields.
Less than two hours from Hanoi, Ninh Binh is a place that makes you forget the hustle and bustle of life, where time seems to slow down, so you can fully enjoy the majestic and poetic beauty of mountains and rivers. Dubbed “Ha Long Bay on land”, this destination opens up before visitors’ eyes a vivid ink painting, where majestic limestone mountains tower between winding rivers and vast rice fields.
Tam Coc gently appears like a shimmering brown silk ribbon, winding between green rice fields (sometimes golden yellow in season) and towering limestone mountains. Trang An possesses a graceful beauty, with emerald-green water sparkling in the sunlight and surrounded by lush greenery. While Tam Coc brings visitors back to a sense of rustic peace, Trang An resembles a magical landscape painting—especially at sunset, when the entire wharf is immersed in the serene beauty of nature.
Climbing to the top of Ngoa Long, you will be able to admire the whole view of the fertile plain, with peaceful villages nestled at the foot of the mountain, and ancient stone towers reaching up to the sky. Ninh Binh is not just a place to admire, but a place to calm down, take a deep breath, and feel your heart expand with each stroke of the oar.
Let yourself float down emerald-green waters, weaving through mysterious caves and towering limestone cliffs. Aboard a small wooden sampan in Tam Coc or Trang An, you’ll witness the locals’ unique technique of rowing with their feet — a cultural quirk you’ll rarely see anywhere else. Each boat trip is a journey of discovery, bringing you closer to the landscape known as “Ha Long Bay on land.”
Taking a bicycle trip to explore Ninh Binh is a must-do activity in the area. Every turn of the wheels takes you past lush green rice fields, winding village paths, and towering limestone mountains. Under the gentle sunlight, you and your loved ones pedaling together, laughing amidst the vibrant hues of green and golden rice fields, brings a pure sense of freedom — a moment when connection and joy come naturally.
Sometimes, you might pause to watch the golden sunset pour over the fields, or to listen to the quiet rhythm of nature. It’s a slow, meaningful journey — as if you’re riding through a living painting, rich in color and feeling.
Don’t miss the chance to climb the 500 intricately carved stone steps to the summit of Ngoa Long Mountain (also known as Mua Cave). While its name references a cave, this is truly a stairway leading to one of Ninh Binh’s most iconic viewpoints. From the top, take in a dreamy panorama of winding rivers, patchwork rice fields, and majestic limestone peaks — especially magical at sunrise or sunset.
No trip is complete without tasting the signature flavors of Ninh Binh.
Amid a valley of green mountains and blue waters, the ancient capital of Hoa Lu appears majestic with its mossy stone gate, ancient temples, and fluttering flags, telling the glorious story of three ancient dynasties (Dinh, Tien Le, and part of the Ly dynasty). The surrounding limestone mountains act like a natural citadel, making this place both majestic and sacred.
Not far away, the complex of Bai Dinh pagoda rises on the hills and is surrounded by forests. If you visit this pagoda at sunset, the golden light gently bathes the curved tiled roofs and towering temples. At the same time, the deep echo of the bell seems to stir something within you.
Looking to trade riverscapes for jungle escapes? Head to Cuc Phuong National Park — Vietnam’s oldest tropical rainforest, located right in Ninh Binh province. It’s home to a rich ecosystem, ancient trees like the thousand-year-old Cho tree, prehistoric caves, and rare wildlife species under protection.
Choose from multiple forest trails, visit the primate and turtle rescue centers, or enjoy the cool, peaceful green of the ancient jungle. This is a must-visit for nature lovers and those craving serenity deep in the forest.
Ninh Binh’s weather is more pleasant than that of the mountainous regions in Northern Vietnam, especially in the spring from January to March. At that time, the weather is cool, just enough for couples to hold hands, visit the pagodas, and pray for lasting love. On the calm rivers, spring festivals with colorful flags add more liveliness to the peaceful space.
Early summer, from late May to mid-June, is the time that fascinates our visitors, thanks to the golden rice season that stretches along both sides of the Ngo Dong River, which flows gently. Many people share that this destination brings them the golden color of Vietnamese agricultural culture and beautiful frames, even if they are just amateur photographers.
And then, from early summer to late August, lotus flowers bloom all over the ponds, mixed with rice fields as if competing to show off their colors with the golden season. Somewhere, you will see couples in traditional ao dai posing next to pink lotus flowers under the yellow sunlight, capturing wonderful moments of Ninh Binh summer.
