If visiting as part of a broader Hue City itinerary by private car, about 30 minutes is usually enough to explore the pagoda. However, if visiting the pagoda on its own, you may want to spend around an hour to explore at a leisurely pace, rest, and soak in the atmosphere.

The route via Phu Xuan Bridge is a scenic and convenient option. After crossing the bridge, turn left onto Tran Hung Dao Street, drive along the Perfume River, and pass the area in front of the Imperial Citadel before continuing to Thien Mu Pagoda. This riverside stretch offers lovely views of Hue.
Another option is to cross Da Vien Bridge. After crossing the bridge, turn left and continue along the Perfume River to the pagoda’s parking area.
Nguyen Hoang Bridge offers another approach, but we do not currently recommend this route for cars. The section in the Phuong Duc Ward area, from where the railway crosses the road to the bridge entrance, often experiences heavy traffic, and some sections of the road have not yet been widened. As a result, driving this route may be less convenient than taking the riverside routes.
Parking and Walking to the Pagoda
If you are traveling by car, the driver cannot drop you off directly at the pagoda entrance because parking is prohibited there. Instead, the driver must take you to the designated parking area for Thien Mu Pagoda.
The parking area is approximately 100 to 120 meters from the pagoda, depending on the type and size of the vehicle. Restrooms are available at the parking area for visitors to use before or after their visit.
When to Visit
Your departure time can be flexible depending on your daily schedule. However, based on our practical experience, 7:00–7:30 AM is a good time to visit if you want to enjoy a quieter atmosphere.
From our observations, many international tour groups typically begin visiting between 8:00 and 8:30 AM, while Vietnamese groups often arrive earlier, between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. Arriving a little earlier can give you more time to enjoy the pagoda’s peaceful atmosphere before it gets busier.
Visiting between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM is another option if a morning visit does not fit your schedule. This is around lunchtime, when many visitors are taking a break for lunch, so there are usually fewer people at the pagoda. Located beside the Perfume River and surrounded by greenery, the pagoda provides a pleasant setting for a leisurely walk in the shade or a relaxing break within the grounds.
In summer, the late afternoon, particularly between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM, can also be a pleasant time to visit, as the weather becomes cooler and the atmosphere more tranquil. As the sun gets lower, its warm light casts long shadows across the Perfume River and the pagoda, creating beautiful photo opportunities.

If you are visiting only Thien Mu Pagoda, you can choose a time that works best for you based on the suggestions above. If you plan to visit other attractions on the same day, consider scheduling Thien Mu Pagoda during one of these time slots for a smoother and more convenient experience.
Visiting Thien Mu Pagoda by Taxi or Ride-Hailing Service
Taxis and ride-hailing services are suitable options if you are making a one-way trip or two separate one-way trips, especially if you plan to spend a significant amount of time at Thien Mu Pagoda, such as talking with the monks or attending a ceremony.
With traditional taxis, asking the driver to wait usually incurs an additional waiting fee. This can make your visit feel rushed if you are trying to sightsee while the meter is running. In contrast, ride-hailing services typically charge per trip and do not require the driver to wait, making them a good option for a one-way trip, with the option to book another ride for the return journey.
If you do not need the vehicle to wait, booking separate one-way trips offers considerable flexibility. However, keep in mind that your return ride may take some time to arrive. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are not always readily available near Thien Mu Pagoda, so a driver may need to travel from Hue City Center to pick you up. This can result in a longer wait than expected.
If you have a specific schedule or need to leave the pagoda at a particular time, it is best to arrange your return transportation in advance rather than relying entirely on finding a vehicle on the spot.
Visiting Thien Mu Pagoda by Motorbike
Traveling by motorbike is more suitable for Vietnamese visitors or foreign tourists who are already accustomed to getting around Vietnam by motorbike. We do not recommend that first-time visitors to Vietnam ride a motorbike themselves, especially if they are unfamiliar with local traffic conditions.
If you want to experience Hue by motorbike, you can opt for a tour organized by a professional travel company that includes a visit to Thien Mu Pagoda. This allows you to enjoy the motorbike experience without having to navigate the traffic and roads yourself.
Cycling to Thien Mu Pagoda
Cycling is a pleasant option if the weather is dry and you want to explore Hue at a slower, more immersive pace. The distance from the city center to Thien Mu Pagoda is manageable, making it suitable for a ride that combines sightseeing with enjoying the atmosphere along the Perfume River.
While there are several routes to the pagoda, we recommend the pedestrian and cycling path along the northern bank of the Perfume River.
If you are starting from the central area on the south bank, cross Trang Tien Bridge, turn right at the northern end, and take the path down to the riverside. From there, the route passes through green parks and runs alongside the Perfume River. Much of the path is shaded by trees, making for a relatively cool and pleasant ride.
This route is particularly enjoyable because it is free of motorbikes and cars, allowing you to cycle at a relaxed pace. Along the way, you can stop at designated rest areas to admire the Perfume River or simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of Hue.
There is one point to note when passing Da Vien Bridge (also called Bach Ho Bridge). At the traffic lights, you need to leave the cycling and pedestrian path and cross the road. Then, rejoin the path and continue cycling along the river. Beyond this section, the route continues conveniently toward Thien Mu Pagoda.
Upon arrival, you should park your bicycle in the designated area near the souvenir shops. Do not take your bicycle directly into the pagoda grounds or leave it in front of the Tam Quan gates, as these areas are not intended for bicycle parking.
Visiting Thien Mu Pagoda by Cyclo
The cyclo is a signature feature of Hue and offers a delightful way to get around the city. However, because cyclos move relatively slowly and tend to be more expensive than other modes of transportation, they are better suited for a single leg of a journey rather than for visiting multiple attractions throughout the day.
A popular option is to take a one-way cyclo ride between the Imperial City and Thien Mu Pagoda, rather than using a cyclo for the round trip. The journey typically takes 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the cyclo’s speed.
If you want to experience a cyclo ride, we do not recommend booking a round trip, as it can be quite time-consuming. Instead, you can combine a one-way cyclo ride with another mode of transportation for the return journey.
To avoid potential issues with pricing and pick-up or drop-off points, we recommend booking your cyclo through your hotel, a tour company, or a travel agency. This approach allows you to agree on the price, timing, and destination in advance.
Visiting Thien Mu Pagoda by Dragon Boat on the Perfume River
A delightful way to travel from Hue City Center to Thien Mu Pagoda is by dragon boat along the Perfume River. You can choose a one-way or round-trip journey, depending on your schedule and how much time you want to spend on the river.
Dragon boats typically depart from Toa Kham Pier, right in the city center, or Pier No. 5 on Le Loi Street, which is located near La Residence Hotel.
This mode of transportation offers more than just a way to get around; it is an opportunity to experience the Perfume River itself. The boats cruise slowly, giving you plenty of time to admire the scenery along the riverbanks. Since the river is not particularly wide, the views of the surrounding landscape remain clear and enjoyable throughout the journey.
Dragon boat journeys take significantly longer than traveling by car. A one-way trip from the city center to Thien Mu usually takes 40 to 60 minutes. Therefore, if your time in Hue is limited, we often recommend taking the dragon boat for just one leg of the journey, either going to Thien Mu or returning to the city center. Many tour operators also use this approach to incorporate a river experience into the itinerary without taking up too much travel time.
If you have more time or want to dedicate your outing specifically to visiting Thien Mu Pagoda, you might opt for a round-trip dragon boat journey. In this case, the boat can wait for you while you visit the pagoda before taking you back to the city center. However, the waiting service incurs an additional fee, so it is advisable to discuss the waiting time and cost in advance to ensure everything is clearly agreed upon.
